Responding to needs in Child Welfare

In every community, there are children and families at a point of crisis, who need help. In those same communities, there are churches who care and want to take action. But what they need is a connection point. CarePortal is an innovative tool giving churches a real-time opportunity to respond.

Meals for Foster Family

Cooks? Bakers? Gift Certificate Orderers? We have a family who has added two sweet foster kids into their active household - making 7 young kiddos in total being loved on!! As one might imagine, the ENERGY & DECISION FATIGUE has hit around meal time!!
A few meals prepared for this family would be such a practical relief - and a yummy way to shore up this crew.

There are no allergies or preferences. The family lives in North Kildonan (or arrangements could be made for Wolseley neighbourhood drop off)

A reunion, school, and a fire

A Mother currently has her one year old son in her care and is working towards reunification with three of her other children (15 and 10 year old boys and an 11 year old girl). The kids will be visiting at her current apartment with the hope of an eventual reunification. My client has been trying to get on her feet as she is starting school in August of this year and has been working really hard at bettering her current situation. In June of this year the apartment directly above her's caught fire, and as a result everything in her suite was ruined. She recently got a new apartment and we have been able to access community resources to get her beds and a few items for her new home. Before school resumes and adds more stress to their lives we would love to set up the family for success with daily living items. Her suite is on the 4th floor and the apartment has an elevator.

Sleepover Couch for Siblings!

N, T and M are siblings who have experienced years of abuse and trauma. N is a young adult who was doing his best to provide for his younger siblings T & M. Their mother would abandon them for days or weeks at a time, leaving N to provide for their basic needs. N did his best to meet their needs, but T &M were not attending school regularly. It came to a breaking point where N could not carry the burden anymore (he was only 20) and called for help. All three of them admitted they lied to myself (their worker) as they were trained to do since they were children. They quickly told me what was truly going on. T & M were brought into care and N went to live with a friend. T & M have been catching up in school, medical, dental and optical needs. N then secured his own housing. N had been working hard to provide for himself and be there for his siblings. There have not been a lot of visits with them and this is something all of us would like to change. We would love to have overnight visits at his home with this siblings, however he has no furniture. N only has a bed and tv, along with smaller items. N has not asked for any help from anyone to furnish his home, and I am doing so as he is a rare young man, who stepped up and did the best he could to provide for his siblings. Therefore I would like to help him furnish his apartment to have sibling visits there regularly. I would like a sleeper sofa* so he could have his siblings stay overnight and a kitchen table and chairs for meals. *The couch can be a sofa bed or futon for the siblings to sleep over.

Respite! What is that?

We have had MANY asks for "Respite" from Fostering Families that are in our own Church Family.
Respite (a.k.a. babysitting/child minding) is a need for ALL ages of children in care, and for the Families that love on them.
This could look like a few hours a week, to a maybe even a weekend every so often.
It is a need that is as individual as each child and each Fostering Family.

If you or your family could see yourselves stepping in to shore up these families please respond and we can begin a conversation!
We would love to create community and build beautiful resource pool (aka people like YOU) within our Church family.

**note** each agency requires different checks and balances but don't be intimidated -- each Foster Family can hand hold and help with all the steps involved.
