Ed’s running journey began in 1979 when he entered his first race, known as the Trib Run for Fun 10K, and in the same year he entered the first Manitoba Marathon held in June. It was not a successful endeavour as he was forced to withdraw from his first marathon with a sore right knee at mile 14.
Fast forward to the spring of 2010, his youngest daughter Stephanie asked him to go for a run with her to which he agreed. Ed had just come off a season of refereeing basketball and thought he was in pretty good shape; he was wrong. Eventually they ran more than they walked and they decided they would sign up for the Air Force Run 10K at the end of May.
Ed’s first race led him to enter his first half marathon in 2011 and his first marathon in 2012, something Ed said he would not do again; but there was this nagging desire of unfinished business. He enjoyed that marathon so much that he started to think about the next. In 2013 there were lots of 10K’s, half marathons, and two full marathons.
In the spring of 2014 Ed began to realize that he had a real passion for running marathons and the idea was born that he wanted to run a whole lot of marathons while raising money and awareness for a local charity called Siloam Mission.
Ed ran a total of 7 marathons in 2014 to see how his body would hold out and he felt great. The plan eventually evolved to 20 marathons in 15 months and would be called runedrun, Running With a Purpose starting in March of 2015 and ending with the Manitoba Marathon in 2016.
The plan grew and Ed ended up running 29 marathons over the 15 months all the while raising money and awareness for Siloam. To date Ed has completed 45 marathons and over 110 races which has covered five provinces, 21 states and seven countries. Ed is a member of the Manitoba Runner’s Association, Marathon Maniacs, 50 States Club and Marathon Globetrotters.
Ed is truly passionate about this sport and the running community which has become a way of life for him and involves his immediate and extended family. Ed say,s “There will come a day when I cannot do this, today is not that day.”
This was Ed’s prayer before the start of each race. ~ by Heidi Toews
A Runner's Prayer
Give me the courage to run the race
Help me to persevere as you taught us
Grant me the strength to finish strong
Honour me with Your presence on my journey
Allow me to be a Grace runner this day.
One more breath...
One more step...
One more mile...
This is my prayer.
I can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens me!
